Pre-Order “The Water And The Blood: The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, Vol. 2″ Now!

Several years ago, I noticed how many Isaac Watts songs were being sung at Sojourn. Sandra McCracken had written two songs that were in heavy rotation in our services – “I Boast No More” and “Laden With Guilt”, both of which were texts written by Watts. At the time, I didn’t have a deep love for hymns. I liked hymn texts, though I viewed them with a certain amount of suspicion. Planting Sojourn, and leading the worship ministry, had required a certain amount of “worship war”  with folks who’d have had us become a traditional worship ministry – piano, organs, …« Read Entire Post

What Makes A Good Hymn?

From The Hymns Of Watts & Wesley, by Bernard Manning: “What makes a good hymn? … these hymns combine personal experience with a presentation of historic events and doctrines… the writers look back from their own experience to those experiences of the Incarnate Son of God on which their faith was built. This gives them a steadiness, a firmness, a security against mere emotionalism and sentimentality which more recent writers, trying to lay bare their souls, have found it difficult to avoid.” I couldn’t agree more with this ingredient in good worship songwriting.  What are some other things that make …« Read Entire Post

NewReleaseTuesday.com Interviews Mike Cosper About "Over The Grave: The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, Vol. 1"

Check out NewReleaseTuesday.com for an interview with Sojourn Worship & Arts Pastor Mike Cosper. They ask him all about the motivation and recording process for our latest worship record, Over The Grave.  A sample quote from Pastor Mike, when asked about themes on the album: One reason we came to Watts is that his stuff has an aggressive tone. What I mean by aggressive is that he goes straight after challenging topics like sin, the devil and death. These are topics which are rich and constant throughout scripture but not necessarily part of the dialog in modern worship circles. I …« Read Entire Post
