Allen P. Ross On True Worship and the "Secular Life"
“There is no secular life for devout worshippers, not for those who in genuine humility (Phil. 2:5-11) make pleasing God their goal (2 Cor. 5:9). They are filled with joy in their worship and ready to meet the needs of others (Heb. 13:15-16). For the devout, every moment is an opportunity for the spiritual life. “But when pride takes over and selfish ambition is the rule of the day so that the needs of the community are ignored, then the words of the prophetic rebukes and warnings that first came to Israel resound in our sanctuaries as well: God still … Read Entire Post

Our good friend (and pastor of Redeemer Fellowship in Illinois) Joe Thorn interviewed Worship & Arts Pastor Mike Cosper as part of his Experiential Theology series. Hop over to joethorn.net and read it today! Here are just a few excerpts: On how theology shapes what we do in gathered worship: Worship has ONE object – the triune God, revealed in the scripture as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Worship has TWO contexts – the broad context of all of life (unceasing, living-sacrifice worship) and the narrow context of the gathered church, who gathers to encourage and build one another up, … Read Entire Post

Worship: The Center of Congregational Life
“Worship stands at the center of congregational life (1) when there is an expectation of encounter with God in worship, (2) when preparation for worship is taken seriously by worship leaders and worshipers, (3) when the programatic life of the congregation supports worship participation for people in all circumstances of life, and (4) when reflection on the worship is pervasive throughout congregational life.” – Jane Rogers Vann, Gathered Before God Photo courtesy Troy Harvey, from Sojourn East campus.

What Makes A Good Hymn?
From The Hymns Of Watts & Wesley, by Bernard Manning: “What makes a good hymn? … these hymns combine personal experience with a presentation of historic events and doctrines… the writers look back from their own experience to those experiences of the Incarnate Son of God on which their faith was built. This gives them a steadiness, a firmness, a security against mere emotionalism and sentimentality which more recent writers, trying to lay bare their souls, have found it difficult to avoid.” I couldn’t agree more with this ingredient in good worship songwriting. What are some other things that make … Read Entire Post

Is The Sunday Service About Covenant Renewal? John Witvliet speaks …
From Worship Seeking Understanding, by Dr. John Witvliet: “Just as the people of Israel gathered together to renew their covenant with God (i.e., Josh. 24:1-27), so we Christians gather to renew the new covenant God has made with us in Christ. Christian worship is like a covenant renewal service in which the gathered reaffirm the vows made with God in Christ. Guided by a liturgy, in a worship service, we renew the promises we made (and often failed to keep) to God, and we hear again the promises God has made (and kept!) in Christ. One legitimate, nourishing robust, vital, … Read Entire Post

Sojourn Music In 2020 – Pastor Mike Cosper On Where We've Been, Where We're Headed
Here in the Sojourn Community, we’re nearing Commitment Sunday — a day when we as a church are being asked to commit to above-and-beyond giving for the sake of the future mission and vision of Sojourn. It’s a good moment for me to pause and reflect (with hope) about where I think the Lord is going to take Sojourn in the next ten years. Before getting to the future, it’s probably helpful to reflect on our past. Ten years ago, when Sojourn began, I was a 19-year-old kid charged with coordinating the musicians who would lead worship. This Saturday and Sunday, March 27 and 28, a Sojourn Music band will lead worship in St. Louis at The Journey. The band will play at all three weekend services at The Journey’s Tower Grove campus, and will bring our CD’s as well. The Journey is one of our sister churches in the Acts 29 Network. They have blessed us in many ways, behind the scenes. They’ve also blessed Sojourn openly, such as when their Lead Pastor Darrin Patrick preached at our Midtown campus during last year’s Louisville Boot Camp, and when their Pastor of Leadership Development Josh Dix participated … Read Entire Post

Check Out A Video Of Jesus In The Wilderness, As Lent Begins
Today Sojourn entered into the season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday morning service (check out a photo blog of the service at our online journal, TravelBlog). As we progress now through the 40 days of Lent, check out this video that we showed a couple years ago during an Ash Wednesday service. It’s a very well-done cartoon depiction of Christ’s 40 days in the wilderness:

NewReleaseTuesday.com Interviews Mike Cosper About "Over The Grave: The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, Vol. 1"
Check out NewReleaseTuesday.com for an interview with Sojourn Worship & Arts Pastor Mike Cosper. They ask him all about the motivation and recording process for our latest worship record, Over The Grave. A sample quote from Pastor Mike, when asked about themes on the album: One reason we came to Watts is that his stuff has an aggressive tone. What I mean by aggressive is that he goes straight after challenging topics like sin, the devil and death. These are topics which are rich and constant throughout scripture but not necessarily part of the dialog in modern worship circles. I … Read Entire Post

Mike Cosper Reviews "Wake Up Love" by Melanie Penn
Back in 2008, I had the privilege of taking part in Dwell 2008 in New York City. Dwell was a church planting conference co-hosted by Acts 29 and Redeemer Presbyterian Church, and was focused on urban church planting. Several hundred church planters packed into an old church in Manhattan for a week to listen to CJ Mahaney, Tim Keller, Mark Driscoll, Eric Mason, Darrin Patrick, and several others spur them on in mission. My very good friend Tim Smith of Mars Hill Church asked me to join him in playing music for the conference, and told me we’d be joining … Read Entire Post
