Celebrate Reformation Day and Pre-Order Our New Christmas Album

Christmas at Sojourn has always been a unique thing. From the first year in the life of the church, we’ve been fascinated by the more gritty side of the Christmas story. The church fathers chose the darkest time of the year to celebrate the dawning of the Light of Lights in the birth of Christ, the entrance of hope into darkness. The Christmas story itself is one of contrasts – God as a baby. A king in a manger. His birth was welcomed not by crowds and royalty, but by outcasts and foreigners. Because the Christmas story is ultimately a …« Read Entire Post

Why Is Sojourn’s “The Water And The Blood” Available On Vinyl?

The digital revolution has given us a many good things. I am a big fan of iTunes, an owner of multiple iPods and iPhones, and I have a computer full of digital music. Every record I’ve ever been a part of has taken advantage of the tools that digital media has provided, and I’m thankful for it. CD’s revolutionized the music world, providing a medium that was essentially degredation-free and highly portable. But it came at a price: ultimately, a choice had to be made between audio quality and portability. 16-bit audio allowed a CD to contain about 70 minutes …« Read Entire Post

Things Got A Little Weird While Recording “The Water And The Blood: The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, Volume Two”

Recording can be an exhausting experience. It might sound like fun – making music all day, playing guitar, etc… – but in truth, it requires a tremendous amount of mental and emotional focus. And sometimes, it takes a little dancing. Here, Brooks Ritter demonstrates the kind of skill, focus, and discipline that is required in the studio.

Pre-Order “The Water And The Blood: The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, Vol. 2″ Now!

Several years ago, I noticed how many Isaac Watts songs were being sung at Sojourn. Sandra McCracken had written two songs that were in heavy rotation in our services – “I Boast No More” and “Laden With Guilt”, both of which were texts written by Watts. At the time, I didn’t have a deep love for hymns. I liked hymn texts, though I viewed them with a certain amount of suspicion. Planting Sojourn, and leading the worship ministry, had required a certain amount of “worship war”  with folks who’d have had us become a traditional worship ministry – piano, organs, …« Read Entire Post

Sojourn Music In 2020 – Pastor Mike Cosper On Where We've Been, Where We're Headed

Here in the Sojourn Community, we’re nearing Commitment Sunday — a day when we as a church are being asked to commit to above-and-beyond giving for the sake of the future mission and vision of Sojourn. It’s a good moment for me to pause and reflect (with hope) about where I think the Lord is going to take Sojourn in the next ten years. Before getting to the future, it’s probably helpful to reflect on our past. Ten years ago, when Sojourn began, I was a 19-year-old kid charged with coordinating the musicians who would lead worship. We had only …« Read Entire Post

Mike Cosper Reviews "Wake Up Love" by Melanie Penn

Back in 2008, I had the privilege of taking part in Dwell 2008 in New York City. Dwell was a church planting conference co-hosted by Acts 29 and Redeemer Presbyterian Church, and was focused on urban church planting. Several hundred church planters packed into an old church in Manhattan for a week to listen to CJ Mahaney, Tim Keller, Mark Driscoll, Eric Mason, Darrin Patrick, and several others spur them on in mission. My very good friend Tim Smith of Mars Hill Church asked me to join him in playing music for the conference, and told me we’d be joining …« Read Entire Post

Guitar In The Church 10: Some Thoughts On Watts, by Sojourn’s Mike Cosper

In today’s churches, the guitar is coming to dominate the landscape in the same way that the piano and organ once did. It’s important that as church musicians we give great care and thought to our guitar playing – everything from chord voicings to tones – so that the instrument is a servant of the congregation, not the star and not the distraction. Each week on Sojournmusic.com, Pastor Mike Cosper posts a guitarist’s feature, which will range from articles to links, online lessons and interviews: Some Thoughts on Watts… Wattage, that is, not the English non-conformist, poet, and father of …« Read Entire Post
