Sojourn’s Liturgy Recap, November 17-18, 2012

Welcome to sojournmusic.com’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap.  You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can find links to the set lists of this church and many other churches each week in the Worship Blog Carnival at theworshipcommunity.com. And you can learn about some of the songs we sing at Sojourn Gathered each week in advance of the Sunday service by reading my “Getting Ready For Sunday” post each Thursday at Sojourn’s online journal, TravelBlog.

Prelude: Sing My Soul written by Sojourn’s Rebecca Elliott, Brooks Ritter and T.J. Hester. This is from our brand new Come Ye Sinners: Sojourn Music Live at Memorial Auditorium, which releases tomorrow at iTunes and our own website, from which you can preorder today.

Call to Worship:

We gather today not as individuals, but as a church – a single body made up of many members. Sunday isn’t an oddity we pile on to the rest of “real life”, rather it’s a place where we focus on the practices that should fill our days – worshiping the Lord, confessing our sins, remembering the Gospel and listening to God’s Word. We practice these things together here and we ask the Lord that he would write these practices on to our hearts, so that as we scatter, we would continue them throughout our days. Hear these words from the Psalms and let’s say the underlined portions together:

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;

there is no end to his greatness.

One generation will praise your works to another

and will declare your power.

All your works praise you, Lord,

and your faithful servants bless you.

They make known the glory of your kingdom

and speak of your power.

My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord:

Let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever.

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;

there is no end to his greatness.

—based on Psalm 145:3-4, 10-11, 21

Song: Gifted Response

Confession:

Lord as we draw near to you, we know that we have not always gathered united.

Forgive us the sins of disunity, O Lord: pride and jealousy and narrow-mindedness.

Forgive us the sins of false unity: lack of compassion, apathy, and indifference.

On the cross, you’ve paid the price for our sins,

and in your resurrection, you’ve invited us into a life of hope

and a life of love and renewal in God’s family.

We hear your promises, Lord, we believe your Word. Help us in our unbelief.

Amen.

Song: O Help My Unbelief, another song we’ve recorded on our brand new live worship record, Come Ye Sinners.

Assurance:

Knowing God welcomes sinners into his family, let’s continue our prayer:

Lord, you have said we are no longer strangers and foreigners.

You have called us citizens along with all of God’s holy people.

We are members of God’s family.

Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets.

And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.

We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord.

Through him we are all being made part of this dwelling where God lives by his Spirit.

May we experience this wondrous truth.

May we love and accept one another as you have loved and accepted us.

May our lives be hidden in the finished work of our Savior, Jesus.

Amen.

Based on Ephesians 2:19-22

Song: Rock of Ages. Hear our version of “Rock Of Ages” and read about this hymn here.

Passing the Peace

As a family united by the Gospel, let’s reach out and welcome one another now. A handshake here won’t suffice. Make it your goal to really make someone feel welcome – just as Jesus has made us feel welcome into his Father’s family.

Giving

Then our preacher taught from 1 Timothy 5:1-2, on a theology of family for the Church. You can hear Sojourn sermons in theSojourn Church iTunes podcast or in the Sermon Resource library at sojournchurch.com.

Song: How Deep the Father’s Love For Us

Song: All I Have is Christ. Hear “All I Have Is Christ” by Sovereign Grace here, where you can also learn about this song.

Reading:

God’s word reminds us that God has made us a family, and that our unity is an expression of the gospel for the watching eyes of the world. The apostle Paul encouraged the church with these words:

Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father, who is over all and in all and living through all. – Ephesians 4:1-6

Song: O Church Arise, the famous modern hymn by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend.

Benediction:

As God is united as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, may we as his adopted children be united in his grace and love. Peace be with you.

  1. The photos from the service are on flickr now. I had them up last night, but forgot to put them in the Sojourn group! Sorry about that.

  2. Mark Riddell says:

Do you have any video available of any of your services? I’m in SE Michigan and would like to visit sometime soon but you’re a little ways away. Thanks for posting so much info. I’ve listened to music and sermons but a video of the service would be very helpful to bring it together.

  3. Stephen says:

Hey guys, I saw that there’s a link to a new recording of O Church Arise from the Come Ye Sinners album, but in looking at the album, I don’t see the song? Am I missing something? I’m really stoked to hear ya’ll’s version of it. Thanks!

  4. sojourn says:

Mark, we don’t have any video available at this time. Thanks for asking!

Stephen, I (Bobby) mistakenly said we’d recorded O Church Arise for the new CD, but the Getty/Townend song we actually recorded was The Power of the Cross. Sorry for the confusion!
