Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs: Sojourn’s Worship Liturgy July 24, 2011

Welcome to sojournmusic.com’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap.  You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led following the Call To Worship, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can find links to the set lists of this church and many other churches each week in the Worship Blog Carnival at theworshipcommunity.com. And you can learn about some of the songs we sing at Sojourn Gathered each week in advance of the Sunday service by reading my “Getting Ready For Sunday” post each Thursday at Sojourn’s online journal, TravelBlog.

Some campuses/service times deviated slightly from this set list.

Call to Worship:

The scriptures call us to do many things when we come before the presence of God. We’re supposed to yell, shout, sing, weep, clap, dance, and bow, laying prostrate before him. The only thing that it never tells us to do is sit. This is because we’re coming before royalty: The God of the Universe is here, and we would never do a king, or a president the dishonor of staying seated before him.

Some of you may not be able physically to stand for a whole service– that’s okay… But we challenge you to take a posture before our God of honor, of fear, and of reverence. Let’s stand together and worship our God

We will praise you, LORD, with all our hearts;

before the world we will sing your praise.
We will bow down toward your holy temple and praise your name
for your unfailing love and your faithfulness.

May all the kings of the earth praise you, LORD,

when they hear your voice.
May they sing of the ways of the LORD, for the glory of the LORD is great.

Though the Lord is great, he cares for the humble,

but he keeps his distance from the proud.

Though we are surrounded by troubles, You will protect us.
You reach out your hand, and the power of your right hand saves us.

– Based on Psalm 138

Song: I Sing the Mighty Power of God written by Isaac Watts. While this song can be used at other times in a corporate worship service, it is an obvious choice for a sung-response to God’s call to worship.

Lord how Thy wonders are displayed, where ‘ere I turn my eye
If I survey the ground I tread, or gaze upon the sky

Confession:

God is holy and we sinners in need of his grace. This next song is a musical prayer that asks God to invade and capture our hearts with His love and mercy.  Feel free to take a posture of prayer as you sing and to use the musical interludes to pray your own words to God. Let’s sing.

Song: Merciful God written by Stuart Townend and Keith & Kristyn Getty.

Broken I come, helpless in sin,
Found at the feet of Your mercy,
Father, forgive; may my sin be remembered no more

Words of Assurance:
This is the love of King Jesus – who willfully traded His heavenly crown for one made of thorns so that we could share in His glory.

Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.

Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father
. – Philippians 2:6-11

Song: Majesty (Here I Am) written by Martin Smith and Stuart Gerrard. This is a strong celebration of the assurance that we have in Christ.

Passing of Peace:

We are called to love each other as Christ loved us. In this spirit, let us greet one another today.

Giving:

Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;

bring an offering, and come into his courts.

Worship the LORD in holy splendor;

tremble before him, – Psalm 96:8-9

We now worship God as Lord over all aspects of our lives by giving back to Him what He has blessed us with so that His kingdom on this Earth can grow and the Gospel can be preached. Let’s pray:

Blessed are you, God of all creation;

through your goodness we have these gifts to share.

Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom.

May we honor you with our words, possession and entire lives. Amen.

Song: Amen, Amen written by Sojourn’s Neil and Kate Robins. You can hear this song in its entirety at the Sojourn Music Bandcamp page. We recorded it on our Advent/Christmas seasons record Advent Songs.

Then our pastor preached about Jesus as the One who Overcomes, focusing on John 16:25-33. You can hear Sojourn sermons from the Sermon library at sojournchurch.com or the Sojourn Church podcast on iTunes.

Song: The God Who Saves written by Aaron Senseman. This Caedmon’s Call favorite has been a part of our gatherings for years. Here, we used it as the weekly Communion song:

Praise the God who saves
And praise the God who bled
Praise the God who was nailed to a tree
And bore our sins on His head

Reading:

This is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world?

Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

Praise God for salvation in Jesus Christ. He is Lord and ruler of our lives!

-Adapted from 1 John 5: 3-5

Song: King of Glory written by Chris Tomlin and Jesse Reeves, based on Psalm 24.

Song: In the Shadow of the Glorious Cross written by Sojourn’s Brooks Ritter and Rebecca Elliott, recorded on our Before The Throne album. You can hear “In The Shadow Of The Glorious Cross” in full, here.

Benediction:

May the love of Christ, that has overcome the world, conquer your hearts daily. Go in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Peace be with you.
