Welcome to sojournmusic.com’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. This set list is from Sunday’s worship service here in Louisville’s Sojourn Church. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led following the Call To Worship, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy.

You can find links to the set lists of this church and many other churches each week in the Worship Blog Carnival at theworshipcommunity.com. And you can learn about some of the songs we sing at Sojourn Gathered each week in advance of the Sunday service by reading my “Getting Ready For Sunday” post each Thursday at Sojourn’s online journal, TravelBlog.

Call to Worship:

Each week we begin our services with a call to worship.  We do this because God Himself has spoken through His word about His Son Jesus, and has invited us to not only hear and reflect on this word, but to respond with faith to Christ and His invitation. Hear the word of the Lord:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
-John 1:1-5

Let’s pray this…

Lord God, we wish to see Jesus. By your Spirit’s power, give us eyes to see his glory. Through Christ we pray. Amen.
—based on John 12:21

Song: My Maker and My King hymn text by Anne Steele, music and adaptation by Worship & Arts Pastor Mike Cosper. You can hear this song of adoration in full on the playlist at our Before The Throne page on Bandcamp — check it out!

Confession:

When we see God’s greatness, we can’t help but be overwhelmed by our sins.
Let’s pray this confession together…

Eternal God, you do not change.
You have revealed yourself to us in your Word.
You call us to worship you in spirit and in truth.
But we confess that we often worship not your
True self but who we wish you to be.
We too often ask you to bless what we do
Rather than seeking to do what you bless.
Forgive us when our worship shapes You
Into what we want instead of shaping
Us into what you want.
By the power of You Spirit help us,
That we might bow before your unspeakable
Majesty and so live for you now and forever.
It’s in the name of Christ Jesus we pray.  Amen.

Song: Come Thou Fount written by Robert Robinson.

Jesus sought me when a stranger,

Wandering from the fold of God;

He to rescue me from danger,

Interposed His precious blood.

Assurance:

Let’s declare this to one another…

And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.

Song: All You Saints by Sojourn’s Jamie Barnes and Brooks Ritter, based on Gadsby Hymn 624. This song, on the doctrine of adoption, is a good hymn of assurance:

Creation wearied, waits in death,

For life again with God’s elect,

By faith, Christ’s blood in us perfects,

Eternal hope we now possess

Passing Of The Peace

Not only has God made us His friends, but also through the sacrifice of Jesus He has adopted us as His very own children.  Let’s greet one another now as family.

Giving
Hear the word of the Lord…

As God’s dear children, then, take him as your pattern,
and follow Christ by loving as he loved you,
giving himself up for us as an offering
and a sweet-smelling sacrifice to God.
—Ephesians 5:1-2,

No matter what season of life we find ourselves, God calls us to give Him our best, including our money. With these gifts, we can preach the Gospel, we can minister to those with great needs and we can press on with the mission of this Church.
Let’s pray:

Gracious God, you have responded to our needs in every way, but most especially
in Christ. Just as He shared with us His life, may we share ours. May the need of our
brothers and sisters become our need, their hunger our hunger and their pain our
pain. May we not hold back but offer our lives and gifts with the expectation that you
will use it to transform the world around us and continue to bring life where there was
once death. We ask in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Song: In Feast or Fallow written by Sandra McCracken.

In the harvest feast or the fallow ground,

My certain hope is in Jesus found

My lot, my cup, my portion sure

Whatever comes, we shall endure

Our pastors at each campus then began our new summer series, The Last Meal, which will cover the Gospel Of John, chapters 13-17. This week’s message centered on John 13:1-17, where Jesus washed His disciples’ feet and explained why He was doing so. You can hear Sojourn sermons on our free iTunes Sojourn Church podcast or in the sermon archives at sojournchurch.com.

Song:  Waters Of Forgiveness written by Sojourn’s Brooks Ritter. This was our communion song for the week. You can hear it from the Bandcamp page for our Double EP project The War/The Mercy Seat.

Reading:

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
-Hebrews 12:1-2

Song:  Like Jesus written by Daniel Dabney. I love the line “Who will spend for you, and for you be spent.” We sang this as a song of dedication and sending, as we finished partaking of communion.

Song: Cling to the Crucified the anonymous text from Bonar’s “Lyra Consolationis,” adapted by Kevin Twit, who also wrote the melody. If you’re unfamiliar with this hymn, you can check it out on Indelible Grace’s 5th album, Wake Thy Slumbering Children, at this link.

Benediction:

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,
the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit
be with all of you. Peace be with you.
