Why Is Sojourn’s “The Water And The Blood” Available On Vinyl?

The digital revolution has given us a many good things. I am a big fan of iTunes, an owner of multiple iPods and iPhones, and I have a computer full of digital music. Every record I’ve ever been a part of has taken advantage of the tools that digital media has provided, and I’m thankful for it. CD’s revolutionized the music world, providing a medium that was essentially degredation-free and highly portable. But it came at a price: ultimately, a choice had to be made between audio quality and portability. 16-bit audio allowed a CD to contain about 70 minutes …« Read Entire Post

Things Got A Little Weird While Recording “The Water And The Blood: The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, Volume Two”

Recording can be an exhausting experience. It might sound like fun – making music all day, playing guitar, etc… – but in truth, it requires a tremendous amount of mental and emotional focus. And sometimes, it takes a little dancing. Here, Brooks Ritter demonstrates the kind of skill, focus, and discipline that is required in the studio.

Keith Getty On Songwriting: Which Comes First, Music Or Lyrics? and more questions

Last week I met many of you at the 2011 National Conference of the Gospel Coalition. Sojourn led a hymn sing on Tuesday night, along with Sandra McCracken, Melanie Penn and members of Indelible Grace and Bifrost Arts. We also hosted a booth throughout the week, and were blessed by the conference sessions. One such session I attended was Keith Getty’s songwriting workshop, so I thought I’d pass along Getty’s answers to the questions many of you have probably asked: Why are the Gettys and Stuart Townend classified as hymn writers, rather than songwriters? Lyrical content Singability for congregations. The …« Read Entire Post

Getting Ready For Sunday: How To Prepare For Our Palm Sunday Worship Service

This week “Getting Ready For Sunday,” our weekly preview of Sojourn Gathered services, appears here on sojournmusic.com rather than blog.sojournchurch.com, which is down for maintenance. Since Ash Wednesday we’ve been journeying through Romans 8, and it’s all coming to a head in just over two week on Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday, also known as Passion Sunday, marks the day of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, during which throngs of supporters laid palm leaves before him and shouted “Hosanna – blessed is He who …« Read Entire Post

Pre-Order “The Water And The Blood: The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, Vol. 2″ Now!

Several years ago, I noticed how many Isaac Watts songs were being sung at Sojourn. Sandra McCracken had written two songs that were in heavy rotation in our services – “I Boast No More” and “Laden With Guilt”, both of which were texts written by Watts. At the time, I didn’t have a deep love for hymns. I liked hymn texts, though I viewed them with a certain amount of suspicion. Planting Sojourn, and leading the worship ministry, had required a certain amount of “worship war”  with folks who’d have had us become a traditional worship ministry – piano, organs, …« Read Entire Post

The Water And The Blood

During a cold, snowy week this January, a group of Sojourners trekked up through nasty roads to Bloomington, Indiana. There, they had the privilege of working with producer Paul Mahern (who has worked with Over the Rhine, The Fray, John Mellencamp, T-Bone Burnett, and many, many more), recording an album that had been years in the making. They recorded live on an old tape machine, creating and album that is warm and intimate — a true “record” of what happened: a band making music, responding to one another, and singing together. It’s raw and rough around the edges, much like Sojourn itself is.
The songs are re-imaginings and adaptations of the hymns of Isaac Watts, the “Father Of English Hymnody.” Watts was an extraordinary pastor and poet. These songs, these snapshots of the gospel, can profoundly help us to see Jesus as more beautiful and more believable.

As musicians, pastors and songwriters, it was an honor to explore the hundreds of hymns that Watts wrote during his lifetime, to learn from the incredible range and depth of his lyrics, and to re-envision those songs with modern language and melodies.
