Welcome to sojournmusic.com’s weekly worship music set list review.  You can find links to the set lists of this church and many other churches each week in the Worship Blog Carnival at theworshipcommunity.com. And you can learn about some of the songs we sing at Sojourn Gathered each week in advance of the Sunday service by reading my “Getting Ready For Sunday” post each Thursday at Sojourn’s online journal, TravelBlog.

This set list recap begins with the first song following the Call To Worship (our sets often begin with a pre-Call To Worship song that is “band leader’s choice,” and so is different in each campus).  Some additional variations in the music sets may have taken place in each service/campus.  Photos this week from the 7pm Midtown Campus service, by Chuck Heeke.

1. The Christ Hymn by Rebecca Dennison and Mike Cosper, based on Colossians 1:15-20.  You’ll find this on our These Things I Remember album.  I interviewed Rebecca Dennison about this song last week, and included the full mp3 of “The Christ Hymn” on the Inside Sojourn podcast interview.  You can get it for free on iTunes, or listen now through the Audio Acrobat player.

2. Beautiful Savior written by Stuart Townend.  This song of adoration is a fitting response to God’s call to worship:

Beautiful Savior. Wonderful counselor,

Clothed in majesty, Lord of history,

You’re the way, the truth, the light

Star of the morning.  Glorious holiness,

You’re the Risen One.  Heaven’s champion.

And You reign, You reign over all.

3. I Boast No More hymn text by Isaac Watts, modern melody by Sandra McCracken.  We used this as an admission of our dependence on Christ; a confession of our need for Him:

The best obedience of my hands

Dares not appear before Thy throne.

But faith can answer Thy demands

By pleading what my Lord has done

4. All You Saints! Adopted Ones! by Brooks Ritter and Jamie Barnes, based on Gadsby Hymn 624.  Brooks and Jamie found the original text while looking for songs based on the theology of adoption.  As Indelible Grace founder Kevin Twit said when he taught a workshop here earlier this year, surprisingly few songs exist on this major biblical doctrine.

Sing to Him, enthroned on high

Who calls is sons and heirs of light,

He sent His Son the ransom for our crimes.

Should thieves or death or demons try

To cheat us of this new birth-right,

We’re safe within the First-Born’s sacrifice

Following this we engaged in the Passing Of The Peace, and then Lead Pastor Daniel Montgomery preached on the Christ Hymn from Colossians 1.  We’ll upload that sermon to the free Sojourn Church iTunes podcast this week.  Also, you can download a free monthly devotional at this link.  The devotional follows our Colossians & Thessalonians sermon series.

5. Come Thou Long Expected Jesus hymn text by Charles Wesley.  Modern melody and arrangement by Bill Mallonee.  We used this great song as our Communion Hymn this week, walking forward to receive the bread and cup while singing and reflecting on this truth:

Come, thou long expected Jesus

Born to set us prisoners free;

From our fears and sins relieve us,

Let us find our rest in Thee.

Israel’s strength and consolation,

Hope of all the earth Thou art;

Dear desire of every nation,

Joy of every longing heart.

6. The World Will Know written by Sojourn’s Mike Cosper and Brooks Ritter, based on Isaac Watts’ “Psalm 22, Pt. 2,” “At Thy Command Dearest Lord,” and “The Wondrous Cross.”  This song reflects on Christ’s victory over sin and looks to the consummation of His triumph:

Great was the victory of His death,

His throne exalted high;

And all the nations of the earth

Shall worship or shall die.  Shall worship or shall die:

7. Solid Rock (My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less) hymn text by Edward Mote, music by William Bradbury.  Our “go home” song preceding the Benediction is a witness in the all sufficiency of Christ to keep us and to bless our work for Him, whether we’re gathered or scattered:

My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

But wholly trust in Jesus’ name.

  1. Russ says:

    I’d love to have the full text to “All You Saints! Adopted Ones!” I Googled it but came up empty… I haven’t dug through my hymnals yet, but thought if you had it handy it might be just as easy to attach it to an email? Thanks!
