Welcome to the sojournmusic.com weekly set list review. You can find links to the set lists of this church and many other churches each week in the Worship Blog Carnival at theworshipcommunity.com. You can learn about some of the songs we sing at Sojourn Gathered each week in advance of the Sunday service by reading my “Getting Ready For Sunday” post each week at Sojourn’s online journal, TravelBlog.  Photos taken this week by Dan Canales.

1. Blessed Are The Poor In This Life by Sojourn’s own Charlie Richardson and Jeremy Quillo (during the two morning services at The 930 Art Center.  The other services sang “All My Tears”).

Blessed are the poor in this life.
Life is more than the things we buy.
All who seek righteousness, Shall be satisfied – They shall be satisfied

2. Warrior by Dave Moisan, Neil Robins and me (Bobby Gilles).  You can hear the mp3 at facebook.com/sojournmusic and myspace.com/sojournrecords.  Or check out “Warrior” at Last.fm now.  We recorded this as the first song on Over The Grave: The Hymns of Isaac Watts, Volume One. Read this story about the writing and creation of “Warrior” here at sojournmusic.com (includes some video footage from the recording studio).

3. Great And Mighty by Aaron Senseman and Kinley Lange.  We used this as a song of adoration to God.  It’s a great song for this week in particular, since Pastor Daniel Montgomery preached on Psalms of Praise:

You are great and mighty, God
clothed in majesty
and You set us apart
You set us free.
And you captured our hearts … You are great and mighty

4. Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing by Robert Pinson.  This is a classic hymn of praise and assurance.  Here is one of the lesser known verses:

On that day when freed from sinning,
I shall see Thy lovely face.
Clothed then in blood washed linen,
how I’ll sing Thy sovereign grace.
Come, my Lord, no longer tarry,
take my ransomed soul away;
Send thine angels now to carry
me to realms of endless day

5. Be Still My Soul by Katharina A. vonSchlegel and Jean Sibelius.  This was our Communion hymn of the week.

Be still, my soul,
The Lord is on your side.
Bear patiently, the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to your God, to order and provide.
In every change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul,
Your best your heavenly friend,
Through thorny waves leads to a joyful end.

6. Refuge by Sojourn’s Neil Robins.  You’ll find this on our Over The Grave album.  Neil adapted this from Isaac Watt’s’ “Psalm 31, pt. 1.”  Hear the “Refuge” mp3 for free at Last.fm now. This is one of the songs for which we added a huge “choir” of Sojourners, belting out the chorus together, at the end of the recording process.  It was a ton of fun.

7. You Never Let Go by Matt and Beth Redman.  This is an excellent song for the sending, which is how we used it for in this Sojourn Gathered service.

Oh no, You never let go
Through the calm and through the storm
Oh no, You never let go —
every high, every low —
Oh no, You never let go
Oh Lord, You never let go of me

I have been digesting Before the Throne and Over the Grave for the better part of two months now, and from the first listen I enjoyed it, but it has grown on me more and more as time progressed. I love the connection that you maintain with the cross while all the while speaking of God’s glory and the hope of the resurrection. I have been part of some very organic worship movements with Enter the Worship Circle, and what I love about these records is what I love about the EWC records. They capture the heart of a group of people who, in humility, long for and live in the presence of God.

And on another note, the musicality of the records is stellar. The records are also an important blend of both the worshippers broken and lamenting heart with the skill of fantastic musicians that is only compounded by an anointing that the Holy Spirit brings. Thanks for that, and I am looking forward to the next release!
