Welcome to the sojournmusic.com weekly set list review. You can find links to the set lists of this church and many other churches each week in the Worship Blog Carnival at theworshipcommunity.com.

You can learn about some of the songs we sing at Sojourn Gathered each week in advance of the Sunday service by reading my “Getting Ready For Sunday” post each week at Sojourn’s online journal, TravelBlog. If you read “Getting Ready For Sunday” this past week, you know that we gave away a free mp3 of Sojourn Worship Leader Jamie Barnes’ version of the John Newton hymn “Approach My Soul The Mercy Seat” (you can download it now on the Sojournmusic.com Radio podcast at iTunes).

1. Approach My Soul The Mercy Seat which, as noted above, was written as a hymn text by John Newton.  Our own Jamie Barnes wrote a fantastic new melody for it.  Be sure to download his acoustic demo at the link above.

2. All Creatures Of Our God And King by Francis of Assissi.  This is always a good choice for a “sung response” to the Call to Worship:

All creatures of our God and King
Lift up your voice and with us sing
Oh, praise Him, Alleluia
Thou burning sun with golden beam
Thou silver moon with softer gleam
Oh, praise Him, Oh, praise Him
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia

3. Psalm 3 by Sojourn’s Rebecca Dennison and Mike Cosper.  Of course this was originally a psalm of David, which is fitting because Lead Pastor Daniel Montgomery began a four-week sermon series on the Book of Psalms at Sojourn Gathered this week.

Sir Isaac Watts put this song into English hymn meter.  Then Rebecca and Pastor Mike adapted it again to create our version, which you will hear later this year on our next worship CD — Volume Two of the Isaac Watts Project.

4. Cling To The Crucified an anonymous hymn text that Indelible Grace founder Kevin Twit arranged and fitted with a new melody.  Kevin, who is also a RUF pastor, is a vociferous collector and reader of books — old, new,  rare, out-of-print, you name it.  He’s taken various ones of us from Sojourn Music on quite a few book-finding expeditions in Grand Rapids (site of the yearly CICW Worship Symposium and also a major hub for Christian publishing).  “Cling To The Crucified” is a text that he found in one of his many old books.

Cling to the Bleeding One, Cling to His side
Cling to the Rising One, In Him abide
Cling to the Coming One, Hope shall arise
Cling to the Reigning One, Joy lights thine eyes

5. Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed hymn text by Isaac Watts.  This week we used the melody composed by Annie Quick of Redeemer Church in New York City.  She based her music on an old Irish melody.

Thus might I hide my blushing face
while His dear cross appears
Dissolve my heart in thankfulness
and melt my eyes to tears

6. Jesus Savior, Pilot Me by Edward Hopper.  We used the arrangement by Bifrost Arts.  This is a cool, old hymn which made a fitting end to our communion time, as we segued into the Sending:

Jesus, Savior, pilot me
Over life’s tempestuous sea;
Unknown waves before me roll,
Hiding rock and treacherous shoal.
Chart and compass come from Thee:
Jesus, Savior, pilot me.

7. The Power Of The Cross written by Stuart Townend and Keith Getty.  This was a triumphant hymn with which to end our worship service and send us into the Benediction:

Oh, to see my name
Written in the wounds,
For through Your suffering I am free.
Death is crushed to death;
Life is mine to live,
Won through Your selfless love.
