Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs: Sojourn’s Worship Music Set List 1-10-2010

by Bobby Gilles on January 11, 2010

Welcome to the sojournmusic.com weekly set list review. You can find links to the set lists of this church and many other churches each week in the Worship Blog Carnival at theworshipcommunity.com.  You can learn about some of the songs we sing at Sojourn Gathered each week in advance of the Sunday service by reading my “Getting Ready For Sunday” post each week at Sojourn’s online journal, TravelBlog. 1. Eyes On The Prize by the great American folk singer-songwriter, Pete Seeger.  This is a fun song for the beginning of a service.  It was also fitting, given that Lead Pastor Daniel Montgomery would preach on “wealth” from Proverbs later in the service.

Hold on; hold on.  Keep your eyes on the prize — hold on!

2. My Maker And My King hymn text by Anne Steel, music and arrangement by Sojourn Worship & Arts Pastor Mike Cosper.  You can hear the mp3 for “My Maker And My King” and read the chord sheet from the Before The Throne page, here at sojournchurch.com.  This is a solid modern hymn of adoration.  And it’s a fun song to sing together (or alone in your car while driving down the highway with the CD/iPod playing loudly).

3. Abide With Me text by Henry Lyte, contemporary melody by Justin Smith. This is both a petition to God and a song that rests in God’s assurance and comfort.  You can find it on Indelible Grace’s Wake Thy Slumbering Children record.

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;

the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide.

When other helpers fail and comforts flee,

Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

4. Fellowship So Deep by Aaron Senseman and Kinley Lange.  This is a song of assurance and community, and it is a great setup for the Passing of the Peace in a worship service (which is how we used it here):

So let us sing of our Redeemer, and of His love which made us free

and know this gift is ours forever — a fellowship so deep.  A fellowship so deep.

5. All I Have Is Yours by me (Bobby Gilles) and Rebecca Bales Elliott.  This is another song from our Before The Throne record.  You can view the chord sheet for “All I Have Is Yours” on the Before The Throne page here.  You can hear the mp3 at Myspace.com/sojournrecords.

We used “All I Have Is Yours” as our communion hymn this week.  The lyrics are appropriate for that, and also for a service in which the sermon hit the biblical teaching on finances:

When I was chained to greed and pride,

tight-fisted; destined just to die

You paid my debt and bought my life,

All I have is Yours.

6. Solid Rock (My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less) by Edward Mote and William Bradbury. Countless believers have sang this hymn together over the years.  We enjoy adding our voices to that number at Sojourn Gathered:

When darkness seems to hide His face,
I rest on His unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.

7. Absent From Flesh by Isaac Watts, with an original melody and text arrangement by Sojourn’s Jamie Barnes.  This is the first song we added to live corporate worship from our Isaac Watts project.  Ironically, we didn’t include it on Over The Grave: The Hymns of Isaac Watts, Volume One.  But this is because we’re saving a spot for it on the upcoming Volume Two, which we’ll release later this year.

The evening worshipers at Sojourn Gathered in The 930 auditorium sang “We Are Changed” from Over The Grave instead.  You can view the chord sheet from our Over The Grave page.  And hear a preview of “We Are Changed” at our iTunes Preview Page for Over The Grave.
