Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs: Sojourn’s Worship Music Set List, 10-11-2009

by Bobby Gilles on October 12, 2009

This set list is one of many that you can find at the worship music set list blog carnival at fredmckinnon.com, featuring many different kinds of churches. You can learn about some of the songs we sing at Sojourn Gathered each week in advance of the Sunday service by reading our “Getting Ready For Sunday” post each Friday at Sojourn’s online journal, TravelBlog.  Photos this week taken by Dan Canales. SJWT_101109_0002 1. Gifted Response by Matt Redman.  We used this song as a corporate response to the Call To Worship, singing praise to God for who He is and what He has done:

And we’ll sing the glory of Your name Celebrate the glories of Your grace We will worship You, We will worship You And we’ll make Your praise so glorious Singing songs of everlasting praise We will worship You, we will worship You

SJWT_101109_00063 2. Lead Us Back by Sojourn’s Bobby Gilles and Brooks Ritter.  You can read the chord sheet and listen to the mp3 of this contemporary hymn of confession right here at sojournmusic.com, on the Before The Throne page

.

You have caused the blind to see We have blinded them again With our man-made laws and creeds, Eager, ready to condemn. Now we plead before Your throne — Power sings a siren tune. We’ve been throwing heavy stones, Lead us back to life in You.

SJWT_101109_0001 3. The Power Of The Cross by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend.  This week at Sojourn Gathered we explored Isaiah 53 together during the sermon.  Our songs, such as this one, all reinforced this striking prophecy of the atonement, written 700 years before Christ.

Oh to see my name written on the wound For through Your suffering I am free. Death is crushed to death, life is mine to live Won through Your selfless love

SJWT_101109_0003 4. Nothing But The Blood by Robert Lowry.  The classic “Sunday school song” presents God’s answer to our fallen state in language that even a child can understand:

What can wash away my sin?  Nothing but the blood of Jesus. What can make me whole and clean?  Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

SJWT_101109_0005 5. In The Shadow Of The Glorious Cross by Sojourn’s Brooks Ritter and Rebecca Elliott.  You can view the chord sheet and hear the mp3 to this song on the Before The Throne page, here at sojournmusic.com.

In the shadow of the glorious cross Compelled by grace to cast my lot. I’ll discard the loss and bear Your name Forsaking all for Your own fame.

SJWT_101109_00046. You Never Let Go by Matt Redman.  We used this modern worship tune as our “song for the Sending” this week, celebrating the assurance of salvation and victory that we have in Christ, the suffering Servant and conquering King.

Oh no, You never let go, Through the calm; through the storm. Oh no, You never let go, Every high, every low, Oh no, You never let go.  Oh Lord, You never let go of me.

What a great mix of old and new songs. Getty and Townend are so good at writing new hymns. I’ve only tried it once but I’m going to reintroduce “Power of the Cross” next month at communion!
