Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs: Sojourn’s Worship Music Set List, 9-20-2009

by Bobby Gilles on September 21, 2009

This set list is one of many that you can find at the worship music set list blog carnival at fredmckinnon.com, featuring many different kinds of churches.  Slight variations to this Sojourn set list may have taken place in each individual service.

1. Great And Mighty , by Caedmon’s Call.  We’ve done this song a lot over the past two or three years.  It’s a good song for setting the tone of a worship service:

You are great and mighty God
Clothed in Majesty
You set us apart and you set us free
When you captured our hearts
You are great and mighty

2. Be Merciful To Me , by Caedmon’s Call.  This song of petition and confession in our utter dependence on God is a great “sung prayer.”

Thy mercy Lord is true
As ever truth will be
But still I cry for you
Be merciful to me

3. Awake My Soul , by Sandra McCracken.  Sandra and her husband Derek Webb played a show last Thursday night at our Germantown campus, The 930 Art Center. It’s always a pleasure to host these great singer-songwriters.  “Awake My Soul” has been recorded by both of them, as well as Caedmon’s Call.  It’s one of my favorites:

I trust no other source or name
Nowhere else can I hide
This grace gives me fear
And this grace holds me near
And all that it asks, it provides

4. Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed? , by Isaac Watts.  Depending on which service our members attended, the worship bands either did an arrangement of this song based on an old Irish melody or they did the version arranged by Sojourners Alex O’Nan and Brooks Ritter, recorded on our new CD, Over The Grave: The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, Volume One. You can read the lyrics and view the chords by opening the PDF on our Over The Grave page.

We used “Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed” as our communion hymn this week.

5. Only Your Blood Is Enough , by Sojourn’s Neil Robins, based on the Isaac Watts hymn “Psalm 51: part 2”.  As always, Isaac Watts did not play it safe with imagery.  And neither did Neil Robins.  It’s a biblical picture of the sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice, over and against any other sacrifice:

No bleeding bird, no bleeding beast,
No hyssup branch, no priest
No running brook, no flood, no sea
Can wash away this stain from me

You can hear “Only Your Blood Is Enough” at myspace.com/sojournrecords or facebook.com/sojournmusic, and download the lyrics/chords at our Over The Grave page.

6. All My Tears , by Julie Miller.  This is a fabulous song, which we’ve done a few times at Sojourn Gathered now.  It’s suitable for many parts of a worship service.  Here, we used it as a song for the sending, before the Benediction:

So
weep
not
 for
 me
 my
friend
When
my
time
below
does
end
For
 my
life
 belongs
 to
him
Who
 will
 raise
the
deadʉ۩again
