Sojourners At Worship God '09: Jamie Barnes Tells All

Those of you who follow @mikecosper and @jamiebarnes on Twitter got to ride along with their exploits and those of the entire Sojourn contingent that gathered in Gaithersburg, Maryland for last week’s Worship God ’09 Conference..  Now you can already listen to all the main sessions from Worship God ’09 at sovereigngraceministries.org. But first, Jamie himself provides a primer on the Sojourn crew — this way you’ll know a little something about them when you run into them at the next big event:

The Fellowship: Know your travel companions

Brooks Ritter –

I’ve ventured around a few times with Brooks for some regional touring. He is always a joy to be around and wears a constant boyish grin. I’m not sure if I could handpick a better friend than Mr. Ritter. But don’t plan on making good time with him in tow. Brooks is a gawker, a balker and a real slow walker. Several times today in the National Art Gallery, our party would turn around to find we were down a man. Brooks was off chasing butterflies and taking in the scenery at his own pace. If Brooks comes with you on your travels, have a few mug shots of the man in your pocket to post around when he goes missing.

Eddy Morris –

One might be tempted to think that Eddy has the potential to tote along bad luck for the journey. The same sort of silly superstition that kept old salty sea captains from allowing women aboard their vessel for fear of some monumental storm swallowing his crew while out on the waves. That assumption is just plain wrong, however. Eddy gives you an edge at scoring better tables at restaurants and just ups the class level for the whole team. Despite his juggernaut jargon, Eddy is always faithful to let you ease into your morning and to give you ample space. Not a the clingy type,  Edward is dependable when called upon. Also, be sure to throw Eddy the keys to your rental and you won’t regret it. He has a good overall sense of direction and style. Just look at him. I would liken him to Josh Brolin’s character in the Goonies. He help you outsmart One Eyed Willie everytime.

Mike Cosper

Often the designated leader of most expeditions, Mike carries the flag into the frontlines. This is unfortunate because you can never be sure when the path you are taking will veer off randomly because of an undeniable urge to find freshly baked cookies. Quiet moments of reflection by your squad will often be interrupted by untelegraphed squawks of harsh volume. The car you let him steer will no doubt require wheel realignment when the trip is over. Buy the insurance when he drives. All of it.

The reason you want Mike leading is that he knows all the finest places to eat no matter what town you are in and his usual diversions often lead to some of the greatest hidden treasures God’s creation holds close.  You also want him to lead so he doesn’t rag on you constantly for being a “crappy leader”.

Jamie Barnes

As for me, I can be honest in saying that I’m a horrible companion out on the great highway. I’m impatient, nervy and never know where I am or where I’m going. I don’t do surprise stop offs or off the beaten path adventures. If its not penciled out on the map, we aren’t going there and I don’t want to hear about what I’d be missing. Shut it. Lets stick to the plan I printed on Google maps and eat at places that are right off the exits. I’m also going to keep you up in the hotel room with snoring and perhaps some light terrors. I’m not all bad though. I might sound miserable throughout the majority of the trip, but rest assured I’m having a good time and am forming some sort of lasting memory.

Maybe one day I’ll get to travel with the band… one day.

  3. Chandler says:

I remember when Brooks help VSBC with VBS, playing the role of the resurrected Jesus. Every year since then, the kids want to know if Jesus was going to show up or not. Brook’s role was very memorable. Thanks, Brooks!
