Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs: Sojourn's Worship Music Set List for 7/9/2009

sojourn071209-02This set list is one of many that you can find at the worship music set list blog carnival at fredmckinnon.com, featuring many different kinds of churches.  Photos this week by Sojourn’s Chuck Heeke.

1. Refuge, written by Sojourn’s Neil Robins, Adapted from “Psalm 31, Part I” by Isaac Watts.  You can view the chord sheet from our Over The Grave: The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, Volume One page. You can also hear much of this song by viewing the preview video on that page, which we’ll leave up awhile longer (you can always find it on YouTube).  This song was a perfect with with our Call To Worship, which we based on 2 Samuel 22:1-3:

David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said:
“The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;

my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield and the horn [a] of my salvation.
He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior-
from violent men you save me.

2. Abide With Me, the old hymn by Henry Lyte, with a melody and arrangement by Justin Smith for Indelible Grace.  I love the picture in the second verse, of God’s patient pursuit and the grace He shows in forgiving us:

Thou on my head, in early youth didst smile;
And, though rebellious, and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee,
On to the close Lord, abide with me.

Joyful, with all the strength I have
My trembling lips should sing:
“Where is your boast of victory grave?
And where is the monster’s sting?”

4. Amen, Amen, by Neil and Kate Robins.  You can hear the mp3 and view the chord sheet from our Advent Songs page.  Incidentally, that page will also show you how to get that entire album for free or whatever you’d be willing to pay, as a digital mp3 download.

“Amen, Amen” is an “advent” or “Christmas” song that we sing year-round at Sojourn Gathered.  This week it was our communion song, which followed a sermon from 1 Kings 15 (revival and renewal under King Asa).

5. Solid Rock (My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less), the timeless hymn by Edward Mote and William Bradbury.  Most people are familiar with the first verse and refrain, but it’s all good — like the final verse:

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh may I then in Him be found.
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.

Then we read a corporate reading from the Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 86.  Typically our readings are based on Bible passages, but we do recite portions of historic confessions from time to time, treating them as we treat the great hymns of the faith — a faith we share with countless others down through the centuries:

Christ has redeemed us by his blood.
But we do good because
Christ by his Spirit is also renewing us to be like himself,
so that in all our living
we may show that we are thankful to God
for all he has done for us,
and so that he may be praised through us.
And we do good
so that we may be assured of our faith by its fruits,
and so that by our godly living
our neighbors may be won over to Christ.

sojourn071209-046. O Church, Arise, by Stuart Townend and Keith Getty.  This is a fantastic song for the sending.  The third verse sets us up for the Benediction (a blessing for the road):

So Spirit come put strength in every stride
Give grace for every hurdle
That we may run with faith to win the prize
Of a servant good and faithful
As saints of old still line the way
Retelling triumphs of His grace
We hear their calls and hunger for the day
When with Christ we stand in glory
