Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs: Sojourn's Worship Music Set List For Sunday, 7-26-2009

This set list is one of many that you can find at the worship music set list blog carnival at fredmckinnon.com, featuring many different kinds of churches.

1. Eyes On The Prize, written by American folk music legend Pete Seeger.

I got my hand on the gospel plow
Won’t take nothing for my journey now
Keep your eyes on the prize, Hold on

2. Refuge, written by Sojourn’s Neil Robins, based on Isaac Watts’s “Psalm 31, part 1″.  You can view the chord sheet on our Over The Grave, The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, part one page. In fact, you can also hear a portion of this song on that page, by clicking on the Over The Grave preview video that we made this past spring.  You’ll not only hear the song, but you can watch some exciting (or scary, depending on how you see it) break dancing by songwriter Neil.  He was also the Over The Grave producer.  He’s an amazing talent and a great guy.

3. How Deep The Father’s Love For Us, written by Stuart Townend.  The 87.87 meter (alternating lines of 8 syllables, then 7, then 8, then 7) helps to make the song “singable” and memorable:

How deep the Father’s love for us,
how vast beyond all measure
That he should give his only son,
to make a wretch his treasure
How great the pain of searing loss,
the Father turned his face away
As wounds which mar the chosen one,
bring many sons to glory

4. Give Us Clean Hand, written by Charlie Hall.  This was our communion song for the week, following a sermon by Teaching Pastor Daniel Montgomery.  Pastor Daniel preached about renewal under King Hezekiah from II Chronicles.  This was a good song to follow this sermon on renewal and repentance:

Give us clean hands, give us pure hearts
Let us not lift our souls to another

5. Cling To The Crucified, written by Indelible Grace leader Kevin Twit, based on an anonymous text from Bonar’s “Lyris Consolationis.”  The three verses each begin with another description of our savior:

  • Cling to the Mighty One
  • Cling to the Living One
  • Cling to the Bleeding One

and lead each time into the refrain:

Cling to the Crucified/ Jesus the lamb who died/ Cling to the Crucified/ Jesus the King

6. We Are Changed, written by me (Bobby Gilles), Neil Robins and Dave Moisan.  You can read the chord sheet from our Over The Grave page. We wrote this based on the Isaac Watts “Hymn 95.”

Not any government on earth,
no law that God has given,
No will of man, no blood, no birth
Can raise a soul to heaven …
