Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs: Sojourn’s worship set list for Sunday, 7-19-09

by Bobby Gilles on July 20, 2009

SJWT_071909_0002This set list is one of many that you can find at the worship music set list blog carnival at fredmckinnon.com, featuring many different kinds of churches.  Photos this week by Sojourn’s Dan Canales.

1. A Country Of My Own, by Thad Cockrell.  Thad is a worship leader at Vintage 21 in Raleigh, North Carolina, and a great singer-songwriter.  You can check out David Mead’s review of his latest album, which includes mention of “A Country Of My Own,” right from Chad’s artist profile on Facebook.

2. Come And Sing, by Sojourn’s own Jeremy Quillo.  You can read the chord sheet on our Before The Throne page and hear the mp3 on Facebook.com/SojournMusic.  This was the “Call To Worship” song on our liturgically-themed Before The Throne album, which is how we used it here as well.  Oh, and it’s one of my six-year old’s favorites, too:

SJWT_071909_00013.Invitacion Fountain, by Michael Pritzl of the Violet Burning.  This is one of our long-standing songs at Sojourn Gathered.  It’s simple and fun, with lead parts for both guys and gals.  And like “Come And Sing,” it’s a good “Call To Worship” song.

4. Be Merciful To Me, by Randall Goodgame.  This song of petition served as a sung prayer, a cry for the mercies of God.  It also presents a strong theological basis for God’s mercy — the blood of His son.  And in just a few lines it presents a panoramic view of the need for mercy, and the deliverance of mercy at Calvary:

From the garden to the cross
Thy mercy did endure
My soul purged from all dross
In blood made pure

SJWT_071909_00035. Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed? by Isaac Watts, arranged by Annie Quick of Redeemer Presbyterian (New York).  She used a traditional Irish tune for the melody.  “Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed?” was our communion hymn for the week:

Was it for crimes that I had done
He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity, grace unknown
And love beyond degree!

SJWT_071909_00046. Mission’s Flame, by Matt Redman.  This was a “sending service” for us.  Todd Robertson, a former Sojourn elder who is now planting a new church named Antioch in Louisville’s south side, delivered a strong sermon on the Old Testament revival under King Jehoshaphat.  We pray for his work in the southern part of this city.  We also commissioned Sojourners who will be spreading the gospel in Italy and Argentina, as well as for the group of leaders we’re sending from our current campus in Germantown to our second campus, in Louisville’s St. Matthews region.  “Mission’s Flame” is as good a song as you could choose to play a part in the Sending:

You should be the praise of ev’ry tongue
You should be the joy of ev’ry heart
But until the fullness
Of Your kingdom comes
Until that final revelation dawns
Send us out
