Daniel wanted to know if we might be interested in joining hands with Southeast and Northside to gather for worship and to pray for our city. I said yes right away. Daniel had one rule, though. Having been at many of these … Read Entire Post

Sojourn worship leader Rebecca Dennison has recorded for Sojourn since 2003, when she laid down one track for the original Christmas album. She played a big part in 2005′s These Things I Remember, and has contributed more recently on Before The Throne and Over The Grave, The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, Volume One. Here, Rebecca gives her thoughts on the different processes used for each of these records. Happy Birthday, Isaac Watts!
July 17 — Isaac Watts, the “Father of English Hymnody,” was born on this date back in 1674. Over 300 years old and he’s still going strong, having just collaborated with Sojourn on Over The Grave: The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, Volume One. We’ve learned a great deal about the Bible, theology and songwriting by studying his hymns and metrical psalms and using them as a framework for our music. We’ve always tried to be clear that Over The Grave (and volume two, which is still in development) is not our attempt to improve upon Watts. We’re simply doing with … Read Entire Post
The Story Behind The Song: Over Death
Sojourn’s Jesse Eubanks shares his songwriting process for “Over Death,” from our brand new album Over The Grave: The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, Volume One: OVER DEATH O for an overcoming faith To cheer my dying hours, To triumph o’er the monster Death, And all his frightful powers. Joyful with all the strength I have My quivering lips should sing, “Where is thy boasted victory, Grave? Where is the monster’s sting?” If sin be pardon’d I’m secure, Death hath no sting beside; The law gives sin its damning power, But Christ, my ransom, died. Now to the God of victory … Read Entire Post

Cookin' With Cosper: Sojourn's Worship & Arts Pastor Shows Another Side …
Last week the Sojourn elders went on retreat, and I was allowed to tag along as a fly on the wall (or in the anointment, depending on your perspective). We’ll have a fuller report of that in TravelBlog later this week, but for now, here’s a quick video from the retreat cabin. Worship & Arts Pastor Mike Cosper lays down the guitar and picks up … kitchen utensils. Turns out, he’s quite the cook. Check it out:

The Story Behind The Song: "Reveal Your Love," from Over The Grave: The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, Volume One
Jesse Eubanks shares the story behind his writing process for “Reveal Your Love,” possibly the most driving song on Over The Grave: The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, Volume One: The deadline for submissions had come and gone for the Watts project, but I figured the real deadline wasn’t until they started recording. So I wrote two more songs and turned them in. About two weeks later, Niel told me they were looking for another song for a female to sing. Apparently, most of the submissions were geared towards male vocalists. Neil wanted something that could be sung by a female … Read Entire Post
