Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs: Sojourn's Worship Liturgy, Sunday, 3/29/09

This is one of many church worship music set lists that you can read through by browsing the links of the Blog Carnival at fredmckinnon.com.  Photos here by Dan Canales.

We began with a Call To Worship from Isaiah 43:1-3.

1. Gifted Response (We Will Worship You), written by Matt Redman.  As the song title implies, this is a response — through singing — to God’s call to worship.  We’ve enjoyed singing it for years:

We have  come to something so mysterious

too deep for minds to comprehend

to the open door, where the angels sing

and the hosts of heaven are antheming …

After this our liturgist read from Ecclesiastes 5:10-11and then led us in a corporate prayer of confession.  To hear more about why we believe in making confession a regular part of our congregational worship services, check out last week’s short interview in the Worship: Why We Do What We Do series.

2. May Your Power Rest On Me, written by Sojourn’s own Joel Gerdis and Neil Robins.  We recorded this for our soon-to-be released worship album Over The Grave: The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, Volume One.  The inspiration for the song of petition came from Watts’s “Hymn 15.”  We’ll have some major news on the release of this record, very soon.

Let Your power rest on me.

You are strong when I am weak.

I can bear all things when temptation springs,

For You sustain me all my days

3. Awake My Soul, by Sandra McCracken, recorded on her album The Builder and The Architect.  This is a great song for reminding us of the assurance we have in  Christ, and for helping us to express that assurance:

I trust no other source or name,

Nowhere else can I hide.

This grace gives me fear, and this grace draws me near,

And all that it asks, it provides.

Following this and the Passing Of The Peace, Sojourn Lead Pastor Daniel Montgomery led us into the book of Deuteronomy as we continued our Old Testament sermon series.  He taught us that we are blessed in order that we may be a blessing.

4. Sovereign Grace, O’er Sin Abounding, written by John Kent, music by Sandra McCracken.  This is another one from The Builder and The Architect.  We used it as our communion hymn of the week, singing and meditating on the words as we came forward to receive the bread and the cup.

We then engaged in a corporate litany based on Romans 8:31-39.  You can read (and use in your own services) many of our readings at theopensourcebook.org. And if you want daily updates when new readings are added to the site, you can either subscribe to the RSS feed or follow The Open Source Book on Twitter (twitter.com/opensourcebook).

5. Refuge, written by Sojourn’s Neil and Kate Robins (who also make up the rock duo Dirt Poor Robins).  This is the song that you hear in the background of our preview video for Over The Grave: The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, Volume One.  Go check it out now, if you haven’t already!

6. We Are Changed, written by Sojourners Neil Robins, Dave Moisan, and yours truly, Bobby Gilles.  This is yet another song from Over The Grave.  I can’t wait to share this record with you.

Not any government on earth,

No law that God has given,

No will of man, no blood, no birth

Can raise a soul to heaven …
