“Why Do Worship Leaders Do That?” p. 9: Why Can’t They Walk The Talk In Their Personal Lives

by Bobby Gilles on January 2, 2009

Welcome to the 9th installment of “Why Do Worship Leaders Do That?” a series that looks at ten top pet peeves that many people across the world hold against church worship leaders.  We’re using pet peeves and complaints first voiced at ragamuffinsoul.com and later, churchrelevance.com.

As always, Sojourn worship leader Lorie King is on the hotseat, using her experience at Sojourn and in many other worship contexts around the globe to talk about these issues.  Today’s topic is “lifestyle.”  From time to time a major “worship leader scandal” seems to break out, such as last year’s faked terminal cancer incident involving the writer of the modern worship song “Healer,” Australian worship leader Mike Guglielmucci .

Of course it’s much more common for people to know a worship leader closer to home who seems to live differently than what one would expect from seeing him or her on stage Sunday mornings.  In this short audio interview, Lorie and I discuss issues like:

  • When the worship leader is ungodly during practice and the work week, but turns into a saint on Sunday morning.
  • When the worship leader acts like a jerk before service and then acts differently once on stage.

I should have actually published a blooper reel of this interview. Normally we record these very quickly, in one take, off the cuff. But for some reason I kept getting tongue tied with this one, or losing my train of thought.

And we actually made it all the way through on about the third try, only to discover that I’d had the recorder in “standby” mode the whole time, so nothing was recorded. What a way to start off the new year. But … we pressed on.
