Courtesy of The Worship Sourcebook, here are selected readings that you’ll find handy in private devotions, family worship, small group meetings and for the liturgy readings in Christmas church services. If used in public worship, have the congregation read the portions in bold type aloud:
Call To Worship Reading:
The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.
Jesus Christ is our life and light.
In his name and in his power, let us worship God!
(based on Isaiah 9:2, NIV)
Open Response: Prayer of Adoration
When all things in silence lay
and the night was in the midst of her course,
your Word leaped down from your royal throne, O God.
So we rejoice and give You praise,
that your Word may live in us
and that we may glorify You forever. Amen.
Open Response: Prayer Of Invocation
O Immanuel,
O Wisdom from on high,
O Lord of might,
O Branch of Jesse’s stem,
O Key of David,
O Bright and Morning Star,
O King of nations,
We rejoice and are glad
on this bright Christmas morning,
for truly you have come,
full of grace and truth.
Even now, come into our hearts again.
Show us the path of knowledge.
Comfort us in our mourning.
Save us from our sin.
Open wide our way to heaven.
Turn our darkness into light.
End our sad divisions
and be our King of peace,
so that every creature in heaven and on earth
will join in a chorus of praise,
and shout with joy to you, our Lord. Amen.
