This is one of many churches set lists you can read by following the Blog Carnival at fredmckinnon.com. Pictures here provided by Dan Canales.
We began worshiping together this week by meditating on a Call to Worship reading from John 1:1-6 and 10-14.
1. God Is With Us, by Sojourn’s Jeremy Quillo and Dustin Neeley, lead pastor at Crossing Church in Louisville’s east end, which Sojourn planted in 2005. This is one of eight songs — originals and standard carols — on our Advent Songs, which you can download for any price you set, or for free. You can also view the chord sheet to “God Is With Us” from our Advent Songs page.
I love the second verse in particular:
Eternity’s likeness has come into time
A light in the darkness, now hope is alive,
down from the heavens on this holy night,
our God in a manger, our God as a child.
2. Angels We Have Heard On High, traditional French Christmas carol arranged by E. Barnes/ Sixpence None The Richer and available on the Sixpence album The Dawn Of Grace. Hear the Sixpence recording of “Angels We Have Heard On High” here.
We then read together from a selection based on Isaiah 12. We spent some time in silence, confessing sins to God and praying for forgiveness.
3. What Child Is This, words by William Dix, music based on Greensleeves, arranged by Sojourn’s Neil and Kate Robins. Another cut from Advent Songs. Check out the free mp3 and chord sheet. I love Neil and Kate’s anthemic modern version of this classic carol — you’ve gotta listen to it.
We then reflected on a reading of Isaiah 60:1 before the Giving of the Peace - a time to greet each other as family, in light of Christ’s sacrifice for us, breaking down the walls of hostility between God and man. For more on the Giving of the Peace and Sojourn’s use of liturgy, see my new article in theworshipcommunity.com, “The Work of the People: Liturgy for Non-liturgical Churches.”
Next, Sojourn Pastor Daniel Montgomery preached “Our Mission, part two” from Romans 15:19-33, expositing that our mission:
- is worked out together in community
- is fueled by godly ambition
- calls for sacrificial giving
- requires planning
- demands prayer
4. How Deep The Father’s Love For Us, by the contemporary hymn writer Stuart Townend. We sang this as our communion hymn of the week, reflecting on the lyrics as we came forward in rows to take the bread and cup:
it was my sin which held Him there
until it was accomplished
His dying voice has brought me life
I know that it is finished
We read together from Mark 13:33-37, where Jesus tells us to watch and pray, since we don’t know when He will return. This is the heart of Advent season.
5. Hosanna in the Highest, another song by Sojourn worship leader/songwriter Jeremy Quillo, recorded on Advent Songs. This was one of the songs that we took to Louisville’s downtown holiday festival Light Up Louisville the day after Thanksgiving. Early tomorrow morning I will post the video of “Hosanna in the Highest” from that night, right here on sojournmusic.com (and it will be available on our free podcast, Sojournmusic.com Radio). Tomorrow’s blog post will also contain the lyrics and a link to the story behind the song. As with the other songs on our album, you can access the chord sheet at any time from the Advent Songs page.
Remember you can also watch previously posted video of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” and “Glory Be” from Light Up Louisville as well.
6. O Come All Ye Faithful, by John Wade in 1751, with a modern arrangement by Sojourn Worship Arts Pastor Mike Cosper. This is yet another song you can hear on Advent Songs, and view the chord sheet from this site.
This is a song of pilgrimage. Sojourn founders chose the name “Sojourn” for our church community as a way to convey this theme, that we are on a journey of gospel transformation. Every day is “Come, let us adore Him,” because it is through our adoration and worship of Christ that everything else stems — evangelism, mission, ministry of reconciliation.
And this is simply a great worship song, as is typical of the songs we choose for this season. Many churches discuss their trouble in finding music for Christmas and Advent that expresses anything more than cozy sentimentality. But the songs are out there.
“Yea, Lord we greet Thee, born that happy morning
Jesus, to Thee be all glory given”
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing
O come let us adore Him … Christ the Lord.

Great setlist! Man you guys take some great pictures during your worship set.
Thanks!
Dan Canales does a wonderful job with the photos. On either Tuesday the 30th or Wednesday the 31st I’m going to publish a “Year In Pictures” post here on sojournmusic.com, featuring many of the best shots he has taken of the worship services in 2008. I think when the photos (with captions, to let everyone know who-is-who in the worship ministry) are published together in one place, it will be very easy to see how blessed we are to have such a dedicated and imaginative photographer.
We did the chorus for O Come, All Ye Faithful this week. What Child Is This is slated for next week. I plan on following it up with “Hallelujah, Glory.” I hope it will work.
I love “O come all Ye Faithful”!
