Benediction and Sending Scripture Readings For Advent Season

As Sojourn Worship Arts Pastor Mike Cosper wrote in the liner notes for our album Advent Songs, the season of the Christian Year known as Advent is”the season of waiting and anticipation before Christmas … we celebrate that our Messiah has come, and we look with longing to the day when he comes again.”

Now, courtesy of The Worship Sourcebook, here are readings for your personal Christian devotions, family worship in the home, or corporate worship services:

Sending: Call to Service/ Discipleship

Be on guard!  Be alert!

You do not know when that time will come.

It’s like a man going away:

He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge,

each with his assigned task,

and tells the one at the door to keep watch.

Therefore keep watch because you do not know

when the owner of the house will come back –

whether in the evening, or at midnight,

or when the rooster crows, or at dawn.

If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping.

What I say to you, I say to everyone: “Watch!”

– Mark 13:33-37 (NIV)

Benediction

Isaiah says,

“The root of Jesse shall come,

the one who rises to rule the Gentiles;

in him the Gentiles shall hope.”

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing,

so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

– Romans 15:12-13 (NRSV)
