Prayer For Illumination and Prayer Of Thanksgiving For Advent Season

by Bobby Gilles on November 22, 2008

Advent is a time of hope and a time of longing.  We await the coming of the promised messiah, Jesus Christ, who came the first time as a babe in a manger and will come the second time as a conquering King on clouds of glory.  Here, for your personal devotions, family worship and corporate church services, you’ll find information on Advent, links to many readings for Advent, and an opportunity to get Sojourn’s Advent Songs for free or whatever price you’d like to pay.

First, courtesy of The Worship Sourcebook, here are two more Advent liturgical readings: a Prayer for Illumination and a Prayer of Thanksgiving:

“Prayer for Illumination” for the Season of Advent

Make us to know your ways, O Lord;

teach us your paths.

Lead us in your truth, and teach us,

for you are the God of our salvation;

for you we wait all day long.  Amen.

— from Psalm 25:4-5, NRSV

“Prayer of Thanksgiving” for the Season of Advent

With joy we praise you, gracious God,

for you have created heaven and earth,

made us in your image, and kept covenant with us —

even when we fell into sin.

We give you thanks for Jesus Christ, our Lord,

whose coming opened to us the way of salvation

and whose triumphant return we eagerly await.

Therefore we join our voices

with all the saints and angels and the whole creation

to proclaim the glory of your name.
