Isaac Watts, Sojourn's Hymn-writing Role Model

Isaac Watts, Sojourn

Once again, today we go to producer Neil Robins’ studio to peek into the recording process for the first of two Sojourn CDs based on the hymns of Isaac Watts.  Today’s song is “Warrior,” written by David Moisan and me.  In these short videos you’ll see Dave (on piano — he’d recorded vocals earlier), Neil, and Pastor Mike Cosper on bass (drummer Ryan Harvey is off camera, laying down some cool percussion in the orchestra room).

As always, you can view all of these videos (and the videos we’ve shot for all the other songs during these recording sessions, from my YouTube page. From there, feel free to email them, embed them into blogs or upload them onto your Facebook and Myspace pages.

In this first short video, Neil and Dave sit at the grand piano.  Neil gives Dave some ideas for the piano part of this recording:

In the next video, Neil and I are back up in the mix room. We’re listening to Dave add his piano part to the instrumentation which the Sojourn band had previously recorded, as well as Dave’s vocal track to the chorus section of our song (a click track plays as well). Neil directs Dave further, regarding piano licks:

In the final video, Mike and Ryan (playing drums down in the orchestra room, off camera) add their parts to the previously recorded string parts. Neil is at the mix board, giving direction. Dave is observing:
“Warrior” is a re-imagining of Watts’ hymn “David rejoiced in God, His strength,” also sometimes known as “Christ exalted to the kingdom.”  Watts himself based it on Psalm 21.  Read it, and you’ll see why we’ve called the song “Warrior,” and why we think it will make a unique addition to the canon of contemporary worship songs.

You can download the second video above from our free podcast, Sojournmusic.com Radio, available at iTunes and other podcast directories.  You can also watch additional short videos from this recording session at myspace.com/sojournrecords and our Facebook page (or, again, view them all on YouTube).
