Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs: Sojourn’s Music Set List For Baptism Sunday, 11/09/2008

by Bobby Gilles on November 10, 2008

SJWT_110908_0007This set list is one of many church music set lists available in the weekly Blog Carnival hosted by fredmckinnon.com.  Photos by Dan Canales.

1. From the Depths, by Sojourn’s own Jeremy Quillo.  You can hear the mp3 and view the chord sheet for “From the Depths” from our These Things I Remember page. Jeremy used Psalm 130 as his model:

1 Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD;
2 O Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy.

3 If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins,
O Lord, who could stand?

4 But with you there is forgiveness;
therefore you are feared.

5 I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
and in his word I put my hope.

6 My soul waits for the Lord
more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning.

7 O Israel, put your hope in the LORD,
for with the LORD is unfailing love
and with him is full redemption.

8 He himself will redeem Israel
from all their sins.

Following this we received the Call to Worship, taken this week from Isaiah 43:19-21.

2. Absent from Flesh, by Isaac Watts and Sojourn pastoral assistant/worship leader Jamie Barnes.  This will be one of the songs on the second of the two worship albums we’re recording for early 2009 release.  This old/new song adds a key dimension to modern worship music, because there are comparatively few contemporary songs of the church which speak of heaven.

SJBS_110908_0004After this, Sojourn pastor Chad Lewis came forward to lead the baptism portion of our liturgy.  On this baptism Sunday (which we hold every two months), we baptized eight people.  At Sojourn, we hear testimonies written out by each of the believers before they are baptized.  Then, as Pastor Chad prepares to immerse them, we all raise our right hands and say together “In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”

SJBS_110908_0001We also use a basic, portable trough for our baptisms. We set it right in front of the stage for all to see.

3. In the Shadow of the Glorious Cross, by Sojourn’s Rebecca Elliott and Brooks Ritter.  You can hear the mp3 and view the chord sheet from the Before the Throne page here on sojournmusic.com.  Also, read the interview Will Kotheimer conducted with Brooks about the writing of this Sojourn original that has caught on with churches around the world.

After this, Pastor Daniel Montgomery concluded his two-week series on Christian Liberty, teaching from Romans 14:13-23, focusing on the principle of mutual edification (you must be willing to limit your liberty for the sake of the genuinely weaker Christian and his or her conscience — v. 13-21, also 1 Corinthians 10:23-29) and the principle of conscience (don’t go against your conscience — v. 22-23)

SJWT_110908_00054. Your Blood Says Everything, by Billy Sommerville.  This is a great song for highlighting the necessity and sufficiency of the blood of Christ to do what we cannot:

In the presence of Holiness

I cannot speak

Your Blood says everything.

In the presence of perfect love

I am too weak

Your blood says everything

5. Solid Rock (My Hope is Built on Nothing Less), by Edward Mote and William Bradbury.  I’ve shared this with you a couple times here on sojournmusic.com, but, one more time, here is video from the Sojourn band leading worship with this classic hymn from St. Louis:

Then we read together from the Belgic Confession, article 27 before singing one more “song for the sending”:

6. Fellowship So Deep, by Aaron Senseman and Kinley Lange for Caedmon’s Call, recorded on their album In the Company of Angels 2.  This is one of my favorites among the songs we’ve added to our congregational repertoire this year.  I love the focus on our communal fellowship as a gift from our Redeemer and a result of his redemptive sacrifice for us on the cross.

SJWT_110908_0002The only change to this set list in the two evening services was the subsitution of “In the Shadow of the Glorious Cross” for another song from our Before the Throne record: “My Maker and My King,” an old Anne Steele hymn that Worship Arts Pastor Mike Cosper revitalized with an aggressive new melody.  Hear it and view the chord sheet from the Before the Throne page.

Several of you have said that you enjoy the photos that Dan Canales takes each week for this blog series. You should check out his new photo blog: http://louisvilleontwowheels.wordpress.com

It’s a cool look at Louisville’s bicyclists. Dan’s signature photo skills plus very short interviews with each subject.

It’s always good to see another church using a trough as a baptismal. We’ve even left the “livestock only” sticker on ours. =)

Thanks Steff. It was such a blessing when Dan started taking photos for us.

Danny — “Livestock only.” I love it.
