New songs for modern missional worship, rich in Christian teaching and contextualized in modern culture. Contemporary hymns, psalms, songs of lament and praise written by members of the Louisville, KY-based Sojourn Community.
This post is in collaboration with other Worship Leaders as a part of the “Sunday Setlists” blog carnival at fredmckinnon.com. Photos by Dan Canalas.
1. Blessed Be The Everlasting God, by Isaac Watts and Sojourn’s own Luke Asher. Luke is a singer-songwriter here in Louisville who has recently joined the worship team. Luke revised and arranged the lyrics to this old Isaac Watts hymn and wrote a pleasing new melody. This marked the first time we’ve sang this song in worship; the band will record it for one of our two upcoming albums based on the hymns of Isaac Watts. Check out an article I wrote about Luke Asher’s solo CD to learn more about this new addition to our team.
After this song came our Call to Worship, based on Psalm 121:1-3 and 7-8, leading into the song of adoration …
2. My Maker And My King, hymn text by Anne Steel, arrangement and music by Sojourn Worship Arts Pastor Mike Cosper. Hear the mp3 and view the chord sheet from our Before the Throne page here at sojournmusic.com. We used this as a song of adoration on our liturgically-driven Before the Throne CD, and that is how we used it here: a celebration of God for who He is and what He’s done. The song followed a spoken call to worship.
We then recited a prayer of lament based on Psalm 34:15-19, followed by time for each of us to pray silently, confessing our sin and our dependance on Christ to atone for our sin.
3. Hear Our Prayer (The Litany Song), hymn text by Robert Grant, arrangement and music by Kevin Twit of Indelible Grace. I’ll be talking more about Indelible Grace in a blog post later this week here on sojournmusic.com. This is the first time we’ve sang “Hear Our Prayer” at Sojourn. It is a classic song of petition:
By the gloom that weiled the skies
over dreadful sacrifice;
by the vault whose dark abode
held in vain the rising God;
O from earth to heaven restored,
mighty reascended Lord —
Listen to our cry; hear our sacred litany
4. It is Well with My Soul, hymn text by Horatio G. Spafford, music by Philip Paul Bliss. The first verse sets the theme (whatever my lot, thou has taught me to say, “It is well. It is well with my soul”). The second verse looks back to the finished work of Christ at Calvary, becoming our sin as He was nailed to the cross. The third verse looks ahead to the consumation of all things, the second coming (the trumpet shall sound, and the Lord shall descend; even so, it is well with my soul.)
After this song and the Giving of the Peace, during which we greet each other in Christian love, Lead Pastor Daniel Montgomery taught on Romans 12:1-2 — giving our whole lives to God as our spiritual act of worship, and being transformed into the image of Christ by the renewing of our mind.
5. Beautiful, Scandalous Night, by Derri Daugherty and Steve Hindalong. The lyrics to this song stood out all the more vividly as we sang it while walking from our seats to the front, taking communion in turn:
Follow Christ to the holy mountain
sinner, sorry and wrecked by the fall.
Cleanse your heart and your soul in the fountain that flows
for you and for me and for all.
6. Holy, Holy, Holy, hymn text by Reginald Heber, music by John Dykes, arrangement by Sufjan Stevens. We’ve been doing the Sufjan Stevens version (from his Christmas album) for about a year now. We sang it here as the last of us filed through to take communion and leave our gifts in one of the offering baskets stationed around the sanctuary, and as we continued to worship.
7. Absent from Flesh, by Isaac Watts and Sojourn’s own Jamie Barnes. This is another song that we will record on one of our upcoming worship CDs. We’ve been singing it at Sojourn since early spring, and it has already become a congregational favorite here. I can’t wait for you all to hear it.

Yeah, my son Garrett actually just started playing clarinet in the 6th grade band — I need to hook him up for some pointers.
This guy’s name is Raphael Starr and he makes that thing sound amazing. He sat in with the band at our last audition and played “All I Have is Yours” from our “Before the Throne” CD, and added so much to the song. He did a cool solo too.

Did you have someone write arrangements for your string/winds section, or did you have them get together and figure out parts? I’ve long desired to have a combo like that, but have no idea how to do it well.

I wonder if I could get our pastor to start playing along. He was a first chair at UNT back in the day.
I have the same questions as Jake. I have neither the time nor the writing chops to chart out instrumental arrangements, so what’s your solution?

Jake, I just talked with pastoral assistant Jamie Barnes and he said the string/wind musicians just got together beforehand and worked out their parts off of the lead sheets.
They’re excellent musicians so it worked out well. In the future, though, we’ll probably do some scoring of arrangements as the occasion warrants it.

We’ve got a keyboardist named Dan Cassin who has a music degree and some experience with scoring — I actually got him to write out sheet music for some of my songs, not long ago. I believe a few others in our worship ministry have some experience with it as well. So in the future Pastor Mike and Jamie plan on tapping them to write out arrangements.

Seriously cool photos! Love the woods. Was the banjo for the Sufjan. Can’t wait to hear the tunes available through the sojourn music site.
