New songs for modern missional worship, rich in Christian teaching and contextualized in modern culture. Contemporary hymns, psalms, songs of lament and praise written by members of the Louisville, KY-based Sojourn Community.
A few days ago I attended a small meeting where worship arts pastor Mike Cosper and worship leader Neil Robins outlined the steps toward our goal of producing two new CDs of music based on the timeless hymns of Isaac Watts. Now that our brand new studio is nearly 100% operational, co-producers Mike and Neil are ready to lead the worship team through the recording process.
As noted before in an audio interview with Mike as well as one with Neil, they will each produce one CD. Neil’s will have a progressive indie-pop sound while Mike’s will have a dark, acoustic vibe. Or as Neil put it in his interview, “Mike is allowed to have banjo on his. I’m not.”
We hope to have one CD ready in time for Christmas, with the other to follow perhaps three months later. Each CD will contain eleven or twelve songs. They will include contributions by a large cast of Sojourn writers, vocalists and musicians, including those featured on past Sojourn CDs and some newer artists.
Here is the exciting new thing we’re going to attempt: we plan on documenting the making of these CD’s through blogging, video, still photos and audio interviews. We hope to be of service to our brothers and sisters in Christ here at Sojourn, to take you Sojourners behind the scenes because you are our family and we want you to be “there” with us as we travel this road — to watch, read and hear about what’s going on, to pray for us and talk to us during the creation of these albums.
We also hope to be of service to our brothers and sisters in Christ who serve in other churches, far and near. We hope to show how we, one small expression of the body of Christ, use current technology and whatever measure of talent we’ve been given to contribute to the rich history of worship through song. We hope, particularly if you desire to make CDs or otherwise compile new music for the church, to give you an idea of how we do things. We also hope it inspires you to share your ideas with us — to document your own experiments. In this way we can all learn from and be inspired by each other.
So when recording begins within the next two or three weeks, stay tuned here to keep abreast of the process. Sign up for our RSS feed to make sure you know whenever sojournmusic.com is updated. And above all, pray for us.
