Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs: Sojourn’s Worship Music Set List For Sunday Morning, July 27, 2008

This week’s recap of songs is posted in collaboration with other worship leaders on the “Sunday Setlists” blog carnival at fredmckinnon.com.

1. Let Justice Roll Like A River, hymn text by me and music by Rebecca Elliott.  We used this as the “come on in and let’s worship together” song this week.  You can hear a live mp3 recorded during a Sojourn worship service, featuring vocals and piano by my co-writer, Rebecca:

Let Justice Roll Like A River mp3

Following “Let Justice Roll …” we responded to a scriptural Call To Worship.

2. Invitation Fountain, by Michael Pritzl of The Violet Burning.  Worship planners, this is a fun song for males and females to sing because it’s got good parts for each, yet is simple to learn and sing.   It’s a good song of dedication as well as a call to worship or call to repentance.

In fact that’s what followed this week: a prayer of confession and repentance.  Which led into our song of assurance in Christ as the atonement for our sins…

3. Thy Mercy, hymn text by John Stocker, music by Sandra McCracken.  The lengthy line meter (11.11.11.11 for those interested in hymnology) is great for stretching out and settling into the topic.  Check out the third verse:

Thy mercy is more than a match for my heart,

which wonders to feel its own hardness depart;

Dissolved by Thy goodness, I fall to the ground

and weep for the praise of the mercy I’ve found.

We read Words of Assurance from the Scriptures together as a congregation and then sang…

4. Before the Throne of God Above, hymn text by Charitie Lees Bancroft, music by Vickie Cook of Sovereign Grace Ministries.  We used this song as the title cut to our Before the Throne project (view our chord sheet from that page). Can there be any more assuring, triumphant lyrics than these?:

Because the sinless Savior died,

my sinful soul is counted free;

for God the Just is satisfied

to look on Him and pardon me —

to look on Him and pardon me.

We followed this with the Giving of the Peace, a time to welcome one another and extend the greeting and peace that God has extended to us through Christ.  I met a lady who is in a culinary arts program at a college here in Louisville, and was selected to be part of a small group that will travel to China and cook for the Olympics next month.  The Olympics!  You never know who you’re going to meet.

Following this, we heard a sermon on Romans 10:1-21 from lead pastor Daniel Montgomery that strongly encouraged us to reach out to the lost, which then led into our time of communion.

5. Beneath the Cross of Jesus, one of many great songs by the Irish husband-wife team Keith and Kristen Getty.  We used this song as our communion hymn this week, appropriate for a group of people filing in line together to take the bread and the cup:

Beneath the cross of Jesus

his family is my own;

Once strangers chasing selfish dreams,

Now one through grace alone

6. Where Your Praise Never Ends, by Sojourn’s own Charlie Richardson.  As I’ve said before, this is one of my favorite (if not absolute favorite) of Charlie’s songs.  Read about Charlie’s faith and music and get video and audio links to Sojourn performances of his songs.  While you’re at it, you should check out his co-leader Lorie King’s new article “10 Tips For Worship Leaders”  at theworshipcommunity.com.

7. Beautiful Savior, by Stuart Townend.  A great “go out and go forth” song for the end of a service and a great follow-up to “Where Your Praise Never Ends.”

I long to be where the praise is never-ending,

Yearn to dwell where the glory never fades;

Where countless worshipers will share one song,

and cries of “worthy” will honour the Lamb!

We ended the service with a benediction — a blessing for the road.

  3. Comment from Cerena:

    Can we buy “Let Justice Roll” anywhere?? I’ve wanted it for forever!

  4. Comment from Bobby Gilles:

    We haven’t put it on a CD. We plan on eventually recording a studio version and then probably releasing it as a free mp3 on this website.

    For now, you can download the mp3 of the live version from my personal song demo website: soundclick.com/bobbygilles. From that site, just click on my music page and you’ll see “Let Justice Roll Live A River” on the top of the list. Just click the “burn mp3” option.
