New Book Teaches That The Home Is A "Little Church"

Sojourn’s first children’s book, Pastor Daddy, written by Lindsey Blair and me, with illustrations by Tessa Janes, is now available to purchase.

From the preface:
“Pastor Daddy was written to teach preschool children the Christian doctrine of the home as a “little church” where the father teaches his family God’s commands and leads them to worship the one true God.

The home is the front line of ministry to children-not the Sunday school or public church gathering. All the practices present in a Christian worship service-the Scriptures, prayer, and praise-should be present in the home as well. Pastor Daddy teaches this truth by repeatedly putting church and home side by side-on adjacent pages.

God expects parents to teach their children when they sit down for meals, when they drive along the road, when they lie down for bed, and when they get up in the morning. These “pastoral” duties can be daunting for dads. So, Pastor Daddy also serves as a reminder that these duties are done in light of God’s grace shown to us through Jesus’ work on the cross.”

The backstory: Sojourn lead pastor Daniel Montgomery approached our Director of Sojourn Kids, Jared Kennedy, about finding someone to do a children’s story based on this topic, which Mark Driscoll (of fellow Acts 29 church Mars Hill) had covered in a sermon.

Jared asked Lindsey and I to come up with a draft, and in the course of a few months we wrote it, revising it often and getting good edits from Sojourn elders and fellow members.  With the manuscript complete, Jared went looking for an illustrator and found one in Tessa Janes.  Her full color illustrations are off the charts.

You can check out the cover and first several pages from the link above.  I’m honored to be a part of such a fun and worthwhile project.  If this interests you, I hope you’ll consider purchasing the book and passing on the link to Christian parents and anyone else who may benefit from Pastor Daddy.

Tomorrow here on sojournmusic.com, I’ll have an interview with worship arts pastor Mike Cosper about the sacred v. secular music debate, and why some of our worship leaders record and perform “secular” music in a variety of settings.
