New songs for modern missional worship, rich in Christian teaching and contextualized in modern culture. Contemporary hymns, psalms, songs of lament and praise written by members of the Louisville, KY-based Sojourn Community.
Those interested in becoming members or learning more about Sojourn go through a six-week course that teaches all the basics of what we believe as well as the unique history of our church and the missional context of Sojourn within the city of Louisville. We place a high priority on worship at Sojourn, believing it to be so much more than a type of music or something we only do as a congregation on Sundays. Wanting to communicate this effectively to anyone who might partner with us, worship arts pastor Mike Cosper teaches on worship for one whole class out of the six. Here is an excerpt from our manual:
Worship as Response
We say every week at Sojourn that worship is our response to God’s initiative. God’s initiative is evident in a basic way by looking at creation and redemption.
Creation
God created everything from nothing (ex nihilo). All of creation is a response to His creative word and initiative.
Redemption
As we discussed in the previous class, God graciously initiates His redemptive work in our lives. We were lost in sin, blind to His glory and goodness. By pouring out His grace and love to us, He enables our worship. (Romans 5:6-8) Ultimately, Christ Himself is our worship leader, making a way and demonstrating how to give glory to the Father.
