Songs Chosen For The Next Sojourn Worship Album

by Bobby Gilles on March 5, 2008

On Monday, Sojourn Worship Arts Pastor Mike Cosper and co-record producer Neil Robins selected a working list of songs for Sojourn’s next worship project from among the many submissions they received from our songwriters.  Here is part of the text of Mike’s announcement to the writers:

Hey folks,

We’re excited to announce the selections for the new Sojourn record. We received 60+ songs from 20+ writers, and have spent the last several weeks visiting and revisiting the tunes to determine what the best direction is ….

We’ve narrowed the list to the selections below, though a few songs not listed are still “on the radar” and may make the final cut. Like wise, as with previous projects, some songs may not make the final cut, so please understand that THIS LIST IS NOT FINAL.

As for selections for bands and singers, Neil and I will begin talking to folks individually about singing particular songs, playing on the records etc. as we move along.

Thanks for your hard work! If you have questions or would like to receive a critique of your work, email me and I’ll send you my notes. In many cases, there are songs that didn’t make the cut that are GOOD songs, but not a good fit for this particular project. Others are songs with good ideas that need significant work to pull together. Either way I’ll be glad to offer notes.

The list of songs shows how God has blessed us with songwriters: nineteen different writers are represented, and included among them are ten different collaborative teams.  Six of the writers have not written songs for Sojourn worship albums before.

The rest include names that are familiar to people who have listened to Sojourn CDs or attended Sojourn worship events: Jeremy Quillo, Jamie Barnes, Rebecca Dennison, Charlie Richardson and more.  I was blessed to be able to continue my favorite way to write modern hymns: working with various collaborators — both first-time partners as well as the two partners I worked with for Before the Throne, Brooks Ritter and Rebecca Elliott.

Neil and his wife Kate, who make up Dirt Poor Robins, contributed to the project, as did Mike Cosper, writing alone and with others.

We’ll bring you more information on this project in the weeks and months to come, as recording begins.
