New songs for modern missional worship, rich in Christian teaching and contextualized in modern culture. Contemporary hymns, psalms, songs of lament and praise written by members of the Louisville, KY-based Sojourn Community.
Thanks to those of you who attended our first Sojourn songwriting seminar today, presented by Jamie Barnes. We had attendees from North Carolina, Indiana, Ohio and more. We’ll take you inside this event later this week on sojournmusic.com.
Now, here is a prayer of illumination that is particularly suited for this time of year:
We have seen the star of your glory rising in splendor.
The radiance of your incarnate Word
pierces the night that covers the earth
and signals the dawn of justice and peace.
May his brightness illumine our lives
and invite all nations to walk as one in your light
even now as your Word is read and proclaimed.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Word made flesh,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit
in the splendor of eternal light, God forever and ever. Amen.

The “prayer of illumination” is simply our response to God’s invitation to hear His written Word and be transformed by the incarnate Word, Jesus Christ. We ask God to illuminate our minds and enable us to understand and experience His Word in our lives.
“We are Listening,” from Before the Throne, is an example of a sung-prayer of illumination.
