Hear a discussion on worship by Matthew Smith of Indelible Grace

by Bobby Gilles on January 13, 2008

Courtesty of the SBTS Institute for Christian Worship, here is an mp3 audio file entitled “Sing to the Lord a new, old song”

Matthew Smith, leader of the touring band for Indelible Grace (check out their website from our Helpful Links section) discusses the need for hymns in a modern world and the benefit of writing contemporary melodies for classic hymns, which is something Sojourn did on our CD Before the Throne, with Mike Cosper’s new melody for Anne Steele’s hymn “My Maker and My King” and our recording of Vikki Cook’s melody for Charitie Bancroft’s “Before the Throne of God Above.”

You’ll also hear examples of old hymns with modern melodies on Advent Songs, including “Amen, Amen,” an adaptation of an Isaac Watts’ hymn by Neil and Kate Robins of Dirt Poor Robins, as well as Watts’ standard “Joy to the World” with a new melody by Jamie Barnes.

And speaking of Jamie Barnes, remember that he will be teaching on the subject of songwriting in Sojourn’s art center, The 930 this coming Saturday, January 19 at 3 pm.  We would love for you to come to this free event if you have any interest in the songwriting process at all.  Click here for a map, directions and a picture of our building.

The address is:

930 Mary Street

Louisville, KY 40204
