The Story Behind The Song: "Lead Us Back" by Bobby Gilles and Brooks Ritter

“Lead Us Back” is one of several modern hymns on “Before The Throne,” Sojourn’s newest CD, and one of two songs of repentance.  I wrote the lyrics in a hymn meter, and singer-songwriter Brooks Ritter then composed the haunting yet simple melody. The lyrics to “Lead Us Back” came from several ideas.  First, I wanted to write a song for the “confession” period of a worship service because our “Before The Throne” project needed songs for each liturgical movement, and also because I needed to confess some things to God. I decided to write a hymn with three verses, each …« Read Entire Post

The Making Of "Before The Throne"

Reprinted from the August Travelogue: God created us for community. This belief has been integral to Sojourn throughout our history, reflected in our Sunday gatherings, community groups and interpersonal relationships. Bold, raw, messy love — this is the stuff of which the Church, the body of Christ, is made, and this love for one another is the way in which the world will know we are Christ’s: “This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples — when they see the love you have for each other.” — John 13:35 Although it is a far cry from …« Read Entire Post

The Story Behind The Song — "Come and Sing" by Jeremy Quillo

Before The Throne, Sojourn’s new CD, begins with a great call-to-worship song written by Jeremy Quillo: “Come and Sing.” Below, Jeremy talks about the writing of this song and what it means to him: I remember going to a church youth camp for a week in Indiana during the summer after my eighth grade year. The guy who led the worship music that week was named Steve, and he sat on a stool playing folk-oriented praise choruses on his acoustic guitar, while we campers sat on a concrete floor and sang while reading the words projected onto a screen by …« Read Entire Post

Before The Throne

Sojourn’s 2007 worship album connects the worship practices of the Church gathered to the ordinary stuff of daily life, a life lived before the throne of God. This life is a rich and varied experience of adoration, confession, thanksgiving, prayer for guidance, prayers of repentance and communal sharing of God’s peace, blessing and love.

Comprised of one classic hymn and ten new songs for worship written by members of the Sojourn community, “Before The Throne” is our most ambitious and collaborative project to date.
